Morgan Smith was Dean of the University of Arkansas School of Medicine from 1912 to 1927. Until 1913, the school was maintained solely on funds derived from students' fees. The Rockefeller Sanitary Commission was created in 1909 by John D. Rockefeller "to bring about a cooperative movement of the medical profession, public health officials, boards of trade, churches, schools, the press, and other agencies for the cure and prevention of hookworm disease."
